After years of teasing and anticipation, Bioware has finally released its newest project, Anthem, at Microsoft‘s E3 press conference yesterday.

From the creators of Mass Effect and Dragon Age, the sci-fi action game is set in a “vast open world” and sees players taking on the role of a Freelancer. Armed with customisable exo-suit called Javelins, the Freelancer is tasked with exploring the unknown and protecting humanity.

Check out the gameplay footage below.

The trailer’s opening shots feature impressive graphics, and tease of a world in which players either “live with the choices they make, or die trying to change them”. Combat mechanics were also shown to include rifles, shotguns, missile salvos, and mortar fire.

Nothing much has been revealed about the in-game setting, except for its post-apocalyptic scenario that gives off some Attack on Titan vibes, especially with the line of  how “the wall protects us from what lies beyond”. However, the gameplay demonstration does take players through “Hell or High Water”, where huge monsters lurk in a lush jungle and bioluminescent underwater grotto.

Anthem is built around “a live service” and supports cooperative play, pitting it up against other games like Destiny. It is confirmed that a team of up to four people can play together and complete missions.

Like other Xbox titles, the game will run in 4K and boast additional features when played on Xbox One X.

Anthem is expected to launch in 2018 for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC.
