Given the large slew of superhero films, many actors have taken on various roles from both Marvel and DC films. While there are a huge plethora of actors that fall into this category, we will focus instead on those who have taken on more prominent roles.
We have complied a list of amazing actors who have taken on the mantle of different Marvel and DC characters over the years.
1. Michael Keaton – Batman and Vulture
Younger movie-goers may remember this actor for his infamous role in Spider-Man: Homecoming as the villainous Vulture, sending chills down the spines of audiences.
However, older comic book fans may remember him from his role as the Dark Knight! Keaton has starred in two of Tim Burton’s Batman films; Batman Begins and Batman Returns. Also, back when it was announced that he was to play the Bat, many fans were outraged as he was most renowned for being a comedic actor and seemed unfit for the role.
Keaton, however, proved these critics wrong as he portrayed Bruce Wayne and Batman well, cementing his outstanding acting ability.
We hope to see more of Keaton in future Spider-Man films!
2. Michelle Pfeiffer – Catwoman and Wasp
This gorgeous actress graced her way into comic book fans’ hearts when she appeared in Tim Burton’s Batman Returns as a crazed but sultry Catwoman. Her portrayal of this psychotic Catwoman has forever been etched in many fans’ memories, marking her as probably the best Catwoman on film to date.
She starred alongside Michael Keaton’s Batman in the aforementioned film and it has been recently announced that she is to appear in the Marvel Cinematic Universe as the first Wasp. Not much is currently known about the movie but I hope that Marvel can somehow slip in a scene where she meets Michael Keaton’s Vulture (to pay homage to their history together).
3. Ryan Reynolds – Deadpool, Green Lantern and Hannibal King
Ryan Reynolds has experienced major success from his Deadpool movie, and deservingly so, starring as the Merc with a Mouth himself. Reynolds pushed hard for the studio to make the film, with the movie only receiving the green light after a test footage was leaked and received plenty of positive reactions from fans.
Reynolds also starred in the flop that was Green Lantern, as the most well known Lantern, Hal Jordan. The movie failed to reach box office success with one of its low points being the poor execution of CGI in the film. He also experienced much backlash from Wolverine: Origins where they turned Deadpool into a monstrous creature with a sealed mouth, much to the disapproval of the actor himself.
Ryan has also acted in Blade: Trinity, another Marvel movie, as Hannibal King.
4. Ben Affleck – Daredevil and Batman
Ben Affleck has had a rather tumultuous acting career, having delivered both good and bad performances on screen. One of his flops would be in Marvel’s Daredevil movie where he portrayed the blind title character.
Affleck is also the second actor in this list to be cast as the Bat himself, portraying the Dark Knight in DC’s Extended Universe. He is set to appear in this year’s Justice League movie and many other DCEU movies to come. Only time will tell if his Batman portrayal will live up to the standards of many fans.
5. Chris Evans – Human Torch and Captain America
Like Ryan Reynolds, Chris Evans has also portrayed two Marvel film characters; the most renowned being Captain America, and the second being the playboy Human Torch, in the first two Fantastic Four films.
Chris Evans has seen much success in the former role as he portrays the studious Steve Rogers to a T, making many around the world huge fans of this admirable hero.
He has also acted as Jake Jensen in the DC film The Losers which garnered mixed reviews.
5. Zoe Saldana – Aisha and Gamora
This actress is no stranger to acting in popular fictional series having portrayed Uhura in the recent Star Trek movie trilogy. She has also acted alongside Chris Evans in DC’s The Losers.
However, she is more renowned for portraying the gorgeous badass alien, Gamora, from Guardians of the Galaxy. It will certainly be exciting to see how she and her fellow Guardians will react to Evan’s Captain America and the rest of the Avengers in the upcoming Avengers: Infinity War movie.
6. Halle Berry – Storm and Catwoman
This bombshell has been cast as one of the X-Men’s most prominent characters; the weather-controlling mutant Storm.
While the X-Men franchise has been met with relative success, with a few exceptions, the same cannot be said for the solo Catwoman movie that she starred in. The movie was a massive flop as the story deviated far too much from its original source, regardless, her role as the original Storm actress in the X-Men franchise is certainly the most memorable one.
7. J.K. Simmons – J. Jonah Jameson and Commissioner Gordon
J.K. Simmons brought many laughs with his portrayal of the hot-headed boss, J. Jonah Jameson of the Daily Bugle. Every scene that he was in brought fans much entertainment and hilarity as he berated Peter Parker to get pictures of Spider-man, unknowingly mocking the hero right in his face.
While his Marvel role was a rather light-hearted one, he has also been cast as the law-enforcing Commissioner Gordon. Judging from the trailer, Simmons seems to be taking on a much darker role in DC’s Justice League. We cannot wait to see what more he can bring to the role.
8. Willem Dafoe – Green Goblin and Nuidis Valko
Dafoe is most notorious for his villainous roles and frightened audiences by terrorising Tobey Maguire’s Spider-Man in the first movie as Green Goblin.
Dafoe has been cast to act as Nuidis Valko in this year’s Justice League, an Atlantean advisor to Jason Momoa’s Aquaman. We are very excited to see him in another movie with J.K. Simmons and are excited see what his role will bring to Justice League’s plot.
9. Tommy Lee Jones – Two-Face and Colonel Chester Phillips
Tommy Lee Jones was the first actor to portray Two-Face on the silver screen. His take on Two-Face was much more comedic as compared to Aaron Eckhart’s rather psychotic portrayal in order to suit the more whimsical atmosphere of Batman Forever.
Jones also played a substantial role in Captain America: The First Avenger as the stern and ever-patriotic Colonel Chester Phillips.
10. Hugo Weaving – V and Red Skull
This Australian actor, like Tommy Lee Jones, acted in Captain America: The First Avenger as Red Skull, notorious Hydra leader.
Prior to that role, he also starred in V for Vendetta as the rebellious V.
